Well, Omaha is a lot bigger than Bay City so it's a lot easier to note ethnic distinctions here. Bay City was a working-class town starting back in the mid- to late-1800s with lumber production and continuing right on through the heyday of the auto industry. The city was settled by working-class immigrants and the town has a few large ethnic groups. The city is divided in half by a river (connected now by bridges, but in the 1800s and early 1900s, the two sides were two separate cities with ferry crossings as the main east-to-west-side connection. The southeast side of the city is where the Poles settled, the northeast side is Irish, the southwest side is German and the northwest side is now pretty mixed (as is much of the city), but was once mostly French.
The more I learn about my little city, the more I want to learn. I have a feeling I'm going to be the town crackpot/historian when I get older. ]]>
