The British holiday has returned with a bang: and motorhome sales, even sales of luxury motorhomes, are rising fast. With a foreign exchange rate too hideous to contemplate, extra airport taxes for flying families and an all out enticement war being fought by proprietors of home grown holiday locations, the local holidays market has been booming for well over a year, with record numbers of Brits forsaking the dodgy comforts of warmer climes for the guaranteed brilliance of home grown holidays.
A motor home is the perfect way to get a guaranteed good break – provided, of course, that the machine itself is in good working order. Motor home regulars will already know what to look for: first timers, though, might need a little advice in order to be sure they are going for the right thing. Motorhome sales can be pretty confusing, if you don’t really know what to look at or what to expect – so a brief guide to selecting a choice home follows here.

The first thing to consider, when looking at motorhomes – luxury motorhomes or regular motorhomes – is the amount of sleeping space available for use. Most motorhomes will have a combination of static sleeping quarters (i.e. beds that are always ready) and fold out extras – though smaller motorhomes will probably use fully fold-out options for all sleepers. Make sure the maximum number of possible beds in the motorhome matches or exceeds the number of people that are going to be sleeping in it.
Use a company whose motorhome sales department is wide ranging and well reputed. Go through all the normal motions that you would when purchasing a new or second hand car. A motor home is a van as well as a caravan – it needs to pass its MOT, it needs to run well and it needs to be insured in the same manner as any other motor vehicle. When attending second hand motorhome sales make sure that you buy from a trade dealer rather than a private individual (unless you want to write off the whole cost of your vehicle when its engine blows up) and ask for a full service history and MOT records. Buying a new motor home, or looking at luxury motorhomes? Make sure you go in with a reasonable idea of the kind of thing you want before you start. With some notable exceptions (including the above mentioned Amber Leisure), motorhome sales are no different to any other kind of vehicle sales. You’ll always walk out having paid more than you want to own more than you need, unless you walk in with a settled idea of what you are looking for in your head.
Play your cards right, and you can reap the unexpected benefits of Britain’s latest period in the sun. As the home tourist industry expands and the luxury motorhomes market swells with it, there are more and more vehicles out there that could give back decades of wonderful holiday fun.
